Polybalm

Polybalm

Polybalm is the only natural nail remedy to be scientifically designed, prepared and evaluated in a major government backed randomized controlled trial (RCT). It contains rare plant-based waxes and biologically active essential oils which have been delicately prepared to preserve their rich polyphenolic compounds with no potential irritants such as preservatives, colours, parabens, sulphates or petroleum. It is designed to be used along side other general nail health strategies

The trial, the largest of its kind ever conducted, involved patients receiving chemotherapy. At the end of the 2 years, researchers reported a profound reduction of chemo induced nail damage and a major improvement in nail related quality of life. The results were announced to the World, at the prestigious American Society of Clinical Oncology conference, Chicago, June 2017. – See full previewed published scientific paper

Uses: although main data supports it’s use during chemotherapy many people are now using polybalm with psoriasis, split, weak, brittle or shellac damaged nails

Evidence for the benefits of probiotic supplements in Sport

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the potential role of probiotics in sport, particularly for enhancing performance, improving motivation to train, reducing fatigue, and promoting recovery.

Studies have shown that athletes have a distinct gut microbiota profile compared to sedentary individuals, with higher levels of bacteria associated with carbohydrate and protein metabolism. However, intense and prolonged exercise can also affect the gut microbiota, leading to an imbalance in microbial diversity and composition. This disruption can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, and cramps, which can impair performance and recovery.

Probiotics, particularly lactobacillus, have been shown to help restore gut homeostasis by improving the balance and diversity of the gut microbiota, enhance nutrient absorption, reduce inflammation, and modulate immune function in athletes. In addition, probiotics may also produce metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids that can benefit athletic performance and recovery. Several studies have investigated the effects of probiotics on exercise performance and recovery, with mixed results:

  1. Improved endurance: Some studies have suggested that probiotics may enhance endurance performance by improving energy metabolism and reducing fatigue. For example, a study published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that athletes who consumed a probiotic supplement including Lactobacillus acidophilus,  for four weeks had a significant increase in time to exhaustion compared to a placebo group.

  2. Improved recovery: Probiotics may also aid in recovery by reducing muscle damage, soreness, and oxidative stress. For example, a study published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport found that a probiotic supplement containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus reduced muscle soreness and improved muscle function in rugby players following a match. Similarly, a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that a probiotic supplement containing Lactobacillus casei improved recovery time and immune function in endurance runners following a marathon.

    Why YourgutPlus+?

    Boost Your Immunity

To function well, your immune system requires balance and harmony. By introducing YourGutPlus+ to your daily routine, you’ll deliver good bacteria to your gut, ultimately balancing out the bad.

    Reduce Inflammation

Excess chronic inflammation of the gut wall caused by too many pro-inflammatory (bad) bacteria over time will thin and damage the integrity of the gut wall. This leads, not only to an increase in inflammatory conditions of the gut but also to an increased risk of multiple chronic conditions throughout the body.

    Restore Your Gut Flora

Yourgutplus+ aims to help restore a healthy gut flora with an emphasis on safety.  It uses a patented slow release capsule which help avoid digestion of the bacteria by the stomach helping the bacteria reach the large bowel where they are most needed.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a delayed release capsule?

The vegetable based capsule which carries the ingredients is designed to resist the acid in the stomach allowing the healthy bacteria to pass into the remaining gut where they are most needed.

What other lifestyle and dietary factors can also effect gut health?

Taking this probiotic is not just the only thing which helps improve the profile of healthy to unhealthy bacteria in the gut. Try to stop smoking, exercise more, reduce processed sugar intake, eat something with live probiotic bacteria every day such as kefir, sauerkraut and foods which help feed these bacteria such as fruit, fibre, vegetables, mushrooms and beans – read more on practical tips on: Keep-healthy.com/gut-health

What is the evidence linking the lactobacillus helps with covid?

The Kings App study, which recorded habits of over 450,000 people over the last 2 years established a link between people who took probiotics and a lower risk of Covid:

Sudre C, et al. (2021) Symptom clusters in COVID-19: A potential clinical prediction tool from the COVIDSymptom Study Sci Adv 7: eabd4177.

The Bedford and Cambridge study reported a significant approximately three fold improvement in symptoms in participants with acute and long term covid:

Thomas R, Aldous J, Forsyth R, Chater A, Williams M (2021) The Influence of a blend of Probiotic Lactobacillus and Prebiotic Inulin on the Duration and Severity of Symptoms among Individuals with Covid-19. Infect Dis Diag Treat 5: 182. DOI: 10.29011/2577-1515.100182

Two other robust studies from across the world have also shown significant benefits for similar blend sof lactobacillus. One protecting family contacts from catching covid and another reducing during of symptoms:

Tang H, . Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of Probiotics To Eliminate COVID-19 Transmission in Exposed Household Contacts (PROTECT-EHC): a clinical trial protocol. BMJ Open. 2021 May 5;11(5):e047069. doi: 10.1136/bmjopen-2020-047069. PMID: 33952552; PMCID: PMC8102858.

Did yourgutplus+ plus help everyone on the study?

In the formal trial, published in January 2020, the rate and degree of improvement was approximately three times greater than expected without it. Not everybody responded and a minority with severe long covid did not improve in the time frame of the study but most continued to take both supplements going forward. It seemed to benefit most participants but men, older people, those with a history of indigestion and those who did not exercise very much seemed to get a particular good benefit.

Is it safe to take this probiotic in the long term?

This lactobacillus blend was specifically chosen with long term safety in mind. Patients in the study did not report any problems taking it for several months. We cannot foresee and issues in taking it continually at these doses (2 a day). Although it’s normal to have some increased gas or bloating for a few days after starting, this should settle and bowel symptoms normally then improve. In the very unlikely event that a person experiences excess gas or bloating after taking yourgutplus+ for several months then it would be sensible to have a two week break before continuing.

Is there evidence that probiotics helps other conditions?

Excess chronic inflammation of the gut wall caused by too many pro-inflammatory (bad ) bacteria over time will thin and damage the integrity of the gut wall. This leads, not only to an increase in conditions of the gut such as irritable bowel, ulcers, cancer and food intolerances, it leads to an increased risk of multiple chronic conditions throughout the body ranging from fatigue, poor exercise performance, arthritis, high cholesterol, low mood and dementia – I comprehensive summary of the links between poor gut health and disease can be found on: Keep-healthy.com/gut-health

Does Yourgutplus+ need to store in cold ? Does high temperature during transportation will affect.

There are several reasons why Yourgutplus+ does not need to be stored in the cold and can sustain even quite high temperature changes during transportation:

The lactobacillus probiotic strains in yourgutplus+ are more resistant loss of viability than other species.

The encapsulation of the probiotics ensures a stable PH, protects them from light, oxidation and humidity. It’s humidity which is most important so after opening the pack it would be good to store in a cold dry place if they are not going to be consumed within a month:

While they are stored and transported the Yourgutplus probiotics are supplied in a dormant (non-growing) state, due to the drying process. This process removes most of the water from around and inside the cells, leaving the microbes in a dormant state. A water activity close to zero impairs growth ensuring that no metabolic activity will take place during the shelf life of the product. When they are swallowed the water and nutrients in the gut move them back into a growth phase.

After drying, studies have shown that inactivation of Lactobacillus was initially observed at temperature of 61-65 °C. By contrast, deactivation occurred at around 54 °C for non-dehydrated strains. It is very unlikely that the probiotics will be exposed to temperatures above 40 °C let alone 60°C

There is evidence that the Inulin also offers further protection from heat.

It is well known that some of the probiotics do not recover from the packaging process which is why large numbers are added to each capsule – the amount left is still very significant. What is also important is there data to show that even damaged probiotics which are not able to pass into the growth phase still offer health benefits. For example, in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 443 individuals with IBS involving orally administered, heat-inactivated probiotics substantially alleviated symptoms associated with IBS, such as abdominal pain or discomfort, abdominal bloating and abnormal bowel habits 1.

    Histamine gut health and probiotics
There are a lot of myths about histamines and probiotics based on small animal studies but  it’s important to remember that histamine and other inflammatory cytokines are essential for the efficient function in the immune system. Histamine is one of the early (innate) chemicals which defends the body by triggering inflammatory response to infection, trauma and insect bites. It also stimulates stomach acid secretion and gut motility, which is crucial for digestive function.
On the other hand, if someone is suffering from chronic excess inflammation, due to genetic factors or exposure to allergens, lifestyle and nutritional choices leading to poor gut health, histamine and other inflammatory chemicals, as well as other toxins can leak into the blood stream. Initially this cause  headaches, flushing, itchy and malaise (histamine intolerance). Over time this excess inflammation can contribute to many chronic diseases.

Alcohol, sulphites, medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), some antibiotics, and antidepressants can also release histamine or inhibit the activity of the enzyme which breaks it down but the most important cause of histamine intolerance is poor gut health causing increased permeability (leaky gut).

SO, It’s important to consider all lifestyle and nutritional factors  to improve gut health including the increased intake of fermented foods (which actually contain histamine). For more information of the causes and consequences (including covid) of poor gut health please see keep-healthy.com/gut-healthIn addition, to diet and lifestyle there are numerous studies reporting a beneficial role for probiotic supplements including those which supposedly do not increase, local gut, histamine such as lactobacillus paracasi, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus which are the major strains found  in Yourgutplus+.
Some websites claim that people with histamine intolerance should avoid other probiotics – based on little or no evidence.
Certainly, the scientific committee of the Phyto-V study did not want to completely restrict the blend, used in the study, to non-histamine producing bacteria as other strains such as bulgaricus have reported very good improvements in gut health, which ultimately reduce leakage of histamine into the body, in the longer term – the most important factor.
What’s more, vitamin D, inulin and the other prebiotics in phyto-v also help gut health and reduce systemic (whole body inflammation) – so as well as the other probiotic, the net result is likely to be less histamine entering the circulation
The most significant factor is that Yourgutplus+ and phyto-v was tested in humans in a large, government approved, double blind randomised controlled trial (RCT) and was shown to be beneficial for the majority (but of course not all). Interestingly,  the level of benefit was higher amount participants who had factors which correlated with poor gut health (remember these people are more likely to be histamine intolerant) – This is best evidence so far results and over rides any argument from earlier non-robust animal studies.
So in summary, we believe that this probiotic (and prebiotic phytochemical blend) is not only safe for those with a history histamine intolerance it is likely to be beneficial. Some people report temporary deterioration in GI symptoms initial but then improve as gut health improves. Either way if some feels they are getting a significant adverse reaction they should stop.
Is there any age restriction on your product?

The capsule contains pure lactobacillus which are one of the safest blend of probiotics – most of the research with lactobacillus has involved children so the evidence strong suggest it is safe in children.  Also the level of vitamin is sensible so again suitable for kids. The label has an age restriction simply because its required by the MRHA – (who without considering the evidence for all ages)

    Dose and Consumption
The dose would be 1 tablet if under 16yrs and 2 a day for adult. You can take either before or after meal because all the benefit is the same.
if capsule is big and difficult swallowing you can open capsule and sprinkle on yogurt or in a drink.
On the other hand, if someone is suffering from chronic excess inflammation, due to genetic factors or exposure to allergens, lifestyle and nutritional choices leading to poor gut health, histamine and other inflammatory chemicals, as well as other toxins can leak into the blood stream.
